Description from the seller
Rare Rococo daily frame - Carved and gilded wood with Putto and Lion Mask - Venice 18th century (1760-1780) - 63x33 cm.
DESCRIPTION.
Magnificent and very rare Italian mirror frame, Late Baroque / Rococo period, attributable to a Venetian workshop of Northern Italy, datable 1760-1780.
A object of great collectible charm, entirely in soft wood (poplar/pine) hand-carved, with rich cartouche and opposite volute decoration.
Decoration:
• At the top: charming putto/cherub mask with a pearl necklace, hand-sculpted (asymmetric eyes, typical of artisanal carving)
• At the bottom: powerful leonine mask with open jaws and original hanging hole
• Ground: grain/ruled ribbed pattern hand-hatted, typical 700s Venetian technique to enhance gilding
• Frame light: olive leaf ribbon beading
Original gold leaf gilding with red bole visible in the gaps, with later 19th-century re-gilding. Beautiful patina and ancient gesso craquelure, not restored.
An identical exemplar to the one sold on eBay USA as "Antique Italian Baroque Cherub and Lion Mirror" at $625.
Provenance: private collection.
Ideal as an entry hall mirror, a dressing table surround, or as a devotional frame for antique print/icon.
TECHNICAL DETAILS - MEASUREMENTS:
• External dimensions: 63 x 33 cm • Internal light dimensions (opening): 14 x 33 cm • Thickness: 3 cm • Weight: 1.110 kg (confirms light antique wood, not modern resin) • Material: Carved wood, gilding with gold leaf • Technique: Pierced/openwork carving, water gilding with grain stippling (bulinatura a chicco di riso)
CONDITIONS:
Good original condition for its age. Chips and wear consistent with ~250 years:
• Gilding with about 30% loss with gold and gesso details, especially on edges
• Small crack on the mouth of the leonine mask (visible in photo, stable)
• Absence of the original mirror glass
• Historical era marks stabilized and not active
• Workshop/inventory marks on the back hand-engraved (cross and geometric symbol).
No modern invasive restoration. Item has not been cleaned with chemicals. Ready to hang, conservative restoration of cleaning by a gilder is recommended.
The attached photos testify to excellent state of preservation and are an integral part of this listing.
SHIPPING: Professional packaging with custom-cut foam and rigid box. Estimated shipping weight about 2.5 kg.
