Magnificent reliquary of the True Cross (De Ligno SS. Crucis), presented in a stamped silver mount, Rococo style, topped by a substantial gilded metal radiating glory. Description
In the center, a circular glass-encased reliquary thèque contains two fragments of wood arranged in a cross, on a background of golden fabric, accompanied by their handwritten identification: de Ligno SS. Crucis
The pedestal, richly adorned with volutes and foliage in the Baroque taste, bears at its center a small gilded bust, identified as that of Pope Gregory XVI (1831-1846).
The whole rests on a red and black marble plinth, presented under an antique glass globe, on a black base adorned with a decorative cordeliere.
Authentic episcopal document of origin dated November 2, 1840, issued in Ghent under the authority of Monseigneur Louis-Joseph Delebecque (1798-1864), Bishop of Ghent.
