Significant Haute Époque Wooden Sculpture of Saint Mary – Lorraine (Metz), 18th Century
Description
Impressive, large and finely carved sacred sculpture of Saint Mary (depicted as Mary Immaculata or Mater Dolorosa), originating from the Metz / Lorraine region, France.
Historical & Technical Details:
Epoch: Haute Époque (ca. 1700).
Origin: France, Lorraine / Metz region (Lorraine sculptor).
Material: Solid hardwood (oak / lime), bois naturel / bois décapé appearance with a deep, historical wood patina.
Construction: The back of the sculpture is traditionally hollowed out (to avoid cracks during drying) and closed with an original period wooden board, fixed with hand-forged iron nails from the 16th century.
Iconography & Features:
Depicted is Saint Mary with long hair pulled back in a bun as a symbol of purity and virginity.
On the crown sits the original forged iron nail/pin, which originally held a separately crafted crown or a radiant halo.
The drapery shows fine, vertically falling tubular folds, characteristic of Lorraine sculptors’ art of the early 18th century.
Condition:
Good, exceptionally authentic antique state for its great age. The right forearm is missing due to a historical wood fracture.
Over the centuries, it has been properly separated from the original mounting, revealing the impressive carving and the deep historical wood patina.
Constructively very solid and stable.

Width: 33 cm
Depth: 22 cm
