Description from the seller

French Art Deco Silver-Plated Table Crumb Sweeper – Curling – Paul Tosany, Paris – Patented Mechanism – Circa 1925–1940

An elegant and ingenious French Art Deco mechanical table crumb sweeper, known in French as a ramasse-miettes, manufactured under the name CURLING and bearing the French patent marking Breveté S.G.D.G.

This charming and unusual table accessory combines refined French silverware craftsmanship with a clever mechanical design, reflecting the elegance and practical innovations of French dining culture during the early 20th century.

Manufacturer and Origin

The piece bears the following markings:

RAMASSE-MIETTES – French for crumb collector.
CURLING – The commercial name of the mechanical crumb sweeper.
BREVETÉ S.G.D.G. – A traditional French patent designation (Sans Garantie Du Gouvernement).
MADE IN FRANCE – French manufacture.

The additional maker's mark, featuring the initials P.T. and a bird's nest motif, is attributed to Paul Tosany, Paris, a French silversmith whose registered maker's mark dates from 1922.

The design and construction are characteristic of French Art Deco table accessories from the 1920s and 1930s.

Design and Function

This attractive circular crumb sweeper features a beautifully polished silver-plated body with a stepped, rounded profile and a distinctive central handle.

Its ingenious mechanical system was designed to remove breadcrumbs from a dining table without disturbing the table setting.

How it works:

The sweeper is simply rolled across the tablecloth. Two rotating cylindrical brushes underneath collect breadcrumbs and small particles into an internal compartment.
By pressing the small button on top, the collecting compartment opens, allowing the accumulated crumbs to be emptied.

A wonderful example of the combination of elegance, functionality and mechanical ingenuity that characterised luxury French table accessories of the Art Deco period.
