A neoclassical display case in an Empire frame contains five sulfur prints dating to 1800–1850, mounted on circular supports and displayed on blue velvet with ivory and gold tones, with exterior measurements of 25 by 30 cm and a total weight around 100 g.
Description from the seller
Collection of five sulfur fingerprints finely worked, mounted inside a display case in an Empire-style frame. Object Details:
Contents: The display case contains five sulfur casts, each depicting a different scene or classic mythological figure carved in relief. These impressions, typical of the XVIIIth–XIXth century "Grand Tour," served as cultured souvenirs and portable catalogues of famous antique and modern gems.
Presentation: The impressions are arranged symmetrically on a deep blue velvet background, which enhances their ivory color and the definition of the details.
Supports: Each impression is mounted on a circular cardboard or parchment support, bordered with a thin gold strip.
Numbering: On some lateral edges of the supports, small handwritten numbers in dark ink are visible (e.g. "106", "109", "33"), which probably indicate a reference to an old catalogue or a larger collection.
Subjects (observed): The scenes depict human and divine figures in classical poses, including profiles, standing figures, and complex multi-figure scenes.
Frame: The frame enclosing the display case is carved wood gilded with leaf, decorated with palmette and foliage motifs typical of the Empire or Restoration styles. It shows signs of age and an authentic patina.
Dimensions: 25 x 30 cm (outside the frame).
Condition:
The sulfur fingerprints appear intact and well preserved under glass. The velvet background retains its vivid color. The gilded frame shows slight wear, small losses in the gilding, and imperfections consistent with age and authenticity of the piece, which do not compromise its overall aesthetics but testify to its history. Please view the detailed photographs carefully, which are an integral part of the description.
A collector’s opportunity:
This display case represents a piece of European collecting history and the neoclassical taste. Ideal for enriching a Wunderkammer, a study, or a collection of glyptics and ancient art objects.
