Description from the seller

Ancient Russian icon “St. Antipas”, patron saint of dentists. Hand-painted on a wooden panel with egg tempera paints on a chalk ground and gold grounding.

Typical method of ikon painting in the 18th and 19th centuries in Tsarist Russia. The motif is quite rare and very popular in the Orthodox Church.

This is an Old Believer icon. The painting is quite masterful and detailed (see photos). Perfectly coordinated color contrasts and successful shading.

Particularly expressive and striking is the face of the Saint (see photos).

The Saint is inscribed. The inscription is easy to read.

The icon probably dates to around 1880–1900 in Central Russia. At the top and bottom there are stirnspönkas inserted. Stable and solid wooden panel. The icon is in good condition with typical age-related signs of wear (see photos).

All details are clearly visible in the photos. Photos are part of the description.

Dimensions: 35.5 x 31 x 2.5 cm
