A pair of antique gilded bronze wall appliques with carved wood and oval mirrors, dating to the 19th century (1850–1900), each with two candle holders and in good condition with age-related wear.
Description from the seller
PAIR OF ANTIQUE WALL SCONCES WITH GILDEN BRONZE MIRROR, FINELY CHISELED AND ENGRAVED WITH A FLORAL BOUQUET IMPRESSA.
France, Louis XVI taste, 19th century
Important pair of wall appliques with mirror, in gilded bronze finely chiselled with a refined neoclassical setting.
Each sconce features an oval mirror with a moulded frame and an inner profile adorned with a sequence of spherical elements.
The top is topped by an elaborate bow and fluttering ribbons motif, from which two decorative elements descend on the sides of the frame.
The side structure is enriched with volutes, foliate motifs and phytomorphic ornamentation, while the lower part is characterized by a rich composition of leaves, flowers and carved vegetal motifs.
Each mirror is flanked by two candle-holders in bronze-like bronze with wooden ends of a characteristic curved form, with grooved elements and finely carved finishes. The joints and uprights are adorned with vegetal motifs, with acanthus leaves and palmette patterns, executed with notable attention to detail.
The gilding shows a patina and surface wear consistent with age, with tone differences and abrasions that document its conservation history. The mirrors show widespread oxidation and foxing, elements of particular interest for assessing their antiquity and the conservation of the ensemble.
The pair stands out for the richness of the carving, the complexity of the ornamentation, and the perfect pendant design, characteristic of appliques intended for representational spaces.
Materials: gilded bronze and carved and gilded wood; mirror.
Era: 19th century, in the 17th-century France style
Condition: good relative to age; wear and losses of the gilding, oxidation of the mirrors and wear to wooden elements. Present restorations and/or professional conservation interventions.
