Description from the seller
United Belgian States - 2 Liards/Oorden 1790 ("Insurrection Coinage")
Beautiful original 2 Liards from 1790, struck for the United Belgian States, the short-lived confederation that arose after the Brabantine Revolution and is generally regarded as a precursor to the later Belgium.
This coin belongs to the very first coins issued by an independent Belgian political entity. The United Belgian States existed for only one year, making coins from this period of special historical and numismatic significance.
The obverse shows the characteristic Belgian lion with the Phrygian cap, a symbol of the independence struggle against Austrian rule. On the reverse is the inscription "AD USUM FOEDERATI BELGII" ("For the use of the United Belgium"), a reference to one of the most fascinating episodes in Belgian history.
The specimen exhibits an attractive natural patina, clear details and well readable inscriptions.
