"COLLECTORS-ITEM"

RARE UNIQUE HAND-PAINTED LARGE INTEC "APOTHEEK GAPER" FROM 1971

A splendid specimen from the "Holland Museum Collection".
Highly sought-after item.

No. 23 in a series of 41
Weight 2.095 Kg.

Condition: excellent

Gapers are genuine folk-art products and were produced exclusively for the Netherlands
Made in the Netherlands between 1960/1980.

Only drugstores and pharmacists with sufficient turnover received this unique, hand-painted Gaper from the company Intec of Veenendaal/Holland.
These were never put on sale/market and were produced in a very small edition.
The molds were destroyed in 1981 in the presence of guests and have not been produced since.

Height; approx. 21 cm
Width; approx. 11.5 cm
Depth; approx. 12 cm

Weight; approx. 2.095 Kg

Material; natural stone

Despite its age, the statue is still in as-new condition.

A gaper served as a sign for pharmacists to attract customers, but also as a mark of quality for the shop.
Initially this sign was placed on the canopy, but from the 17th century it was increasingly attached to the facade; particularly in Amsterdam this was very common.
The mouth of the gaper is not open to yawn, but to take a medicine.
The grimace of many gapers is explained by the belief that the medicine tastes bad.

We will send it very well packed but cannot be held liable for damage during transport.
