Description from the seller
Elegant Art Deco Silver-Plated Crumb Tray and Scraper Set – O. Gallia / Christofle – France, circa 1920–1930
An elegant and beautifully designed Art Deco table crumb tray and scraper set, manufactured by the renowned French silverware house Orfèvrerie Gallia, associated with Christofle, dating from approximately 1920–1930.
This refined two-piece set is a wonderful example of the modernist design that characterised French decorative arts during the Art Deco period.
Design and craftsmanship
The set consists of a rectangular crumb tray with softly rounded corners and a matching elongated crumb scraper.
Both pieces feature a remarkably sleek, geometric design, with clean architectural lines, gently curved edges and elegant flat handles.
The absence of unnecessary ornamentation emphasises the purity of the design, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic of the French Art Deco movement.
The beautifully polished silver-plated surfaces create attractive reflections and give the set a timeless elegance.
Orfèvrerie Gallia and Christofle
Gallia was a distinguished French silverware brand associated with the prestigious house of Christofle, one of France's most celebrated manufacturers of luxury silverware.
The Gallia collection became particularly renowned for its innovative designs, high-quality silver-plated objects and artistic creations during the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.
Gallia pieces from the early 20th century are appreciated by collectors for their craftsmanship, distinctive styling and historical connection with French decorative arts.
The tray bears the O. Gallia hallmark, together with the characteristic Gallia maker's marks and the reference number 0441.
The marks are consistent with the Gallia silver-plated production associated with Christofle.
Original purpose
This is a traditional French ramasse-miettes, or table crumb tray and scraper set.
Such elegant table accessories were used in refined households, restaurants and dining establishments to discreetly remove breadcrumbs and small food particles from the tablecloth between courses.
The scraper was gently passed across the tablecloth to collect crumbs, which were then transferred into the matching tray.
Beyond its original practical function, the set is a charming decorative accessory for an elegant dining room, a sophisticated table setting or an Art Deco collection.
