Description from the seller
Handmade Angel. Craftsmanship typical of the Neapolitan tradition – Handcrafted work richly dressed with celebrated wings and details in terracotta/plaster – 1920s/1930s.
This splendid figure is designed to be hung, ideal to stand proudly at the center of a large Nativity scene or as a refined sacred art decoration.
The head, hands and feet are perfect and masterfully molded in terracotta, eyes in glass, according to traditional use and hand-painted with notable expressive force. The gaze, slightly turned to the side and upwards and the mouth open capture the typical dramatic intensity of celestial figures in the Nativity.
Hands and feet are defined with surprising naturalism. The left hand holds a delicate rose bud of fabric, while the right arm extends in a classic gesture of blessing and announcement. The bare feet, visible beneath the robes, show anatomy cared for in minute detail.
Majestic wings, large in size, made of terracotta and richly worked in relief to simulate the plumage. The coloration in shades of brown, ochre and white gives three-dimensionality and an ancient and vibrant, almost sculptural appearance. Internal structure in iron wire and tacking according to Neapolitan tradition
Excellent craftsmanship. The Shepherd was part of the Nativity scene of a Noble Family.
All limbs and fabrics are movable and adjustable to personal taste.
Dimensions are 32 cm x 32 cm x 14 cm
The shepherd is in excellent condition; normal signs of time wear on the fabric are noted and a professional repair is noted in one corner of one of the wings, see photos.
Photos are integral and fundamental parts of the description.
