Description from the seller
Magnificent Victorian Crystal Claret Jug with Silver-Plated Mounts and Sculptural Ram's Head – attr. England, circa 1880–1900
An exceptionally elegant late 19th-century claret jug, combining beautifully patterned clear crystal with richly detailed silver-plated mounts. A wonderful example of Victorian craftsmanship and refined tableware.
The tall, gently tapering crystal body is decorated throughout with an intricate repeating diamond-shaped pattern, creating a magnificent play of light and reflections. Particularly striking is the beautifully twisted crystal handle, displaying remarkable craftsmanship and perfectly complementing the textured body.
The silver-plated upper mount features an elegant, flowing scalloped edge, extending down over the crystal in a decorative design.
One of the most remarkable features is the finely sculpted ram's head beneath the pouring spout. Executed with exceptional attention to detail, this classical motif adds character and distinction to the piece. The ram's head is traditionally associated with strength and abundance and reflects the neoclassical influences popular during the Victorian era.
The jug is completed by a beautifully fitted hinged lid with an elaborate openwork thumbpiece, allowing the lid to be opened while pouring.
The silver-plated mount bears the maker's mark HR within a rectangular cartouche. The precise manufacturer has not yet been conclusively identified.
Historical background and use
During the Victorian period, claret jugs were prestigious accessories for elegant dining rooms and formal entertaining. They were traditionally used to serve claret, the British name for red Bordeaux wine.
Combining decorative glasswork with silver or silver-plated mounts, these sophisticated vessels became fashionable throughout the second half of the 19th century.
Today, this magnificent jug can still be used for serving wine or water, while also making an impressive decorative object for a beautifully laid table, antique sideboard or refined interior.
