Description from the seller

Sealed reliquary reliquary case of Saint Andrew the Apostle – 19th century - Bruges

Circular reliquary case in silvered metal, with pearl-bordered edge, containing a relic attributed to Saint Andrew the Apostle, brother of Saint Peter.

The relic is placed at the center of a small red fabric cross, on a background of finely worked gold fabric, accompanied by its handwritten titulus: “S. Andreae Apost.” — Saint Andrew the Apostle.

On the reverse, the reliquary retains its ecclesiastical red wax seal, stamped with episcopal coat of arms, held by four red silk threads. An old handwritten annotation mentions “Bruges” as well as an inventory number.

Saint Andrew, one of Christ’s twelve apostles and brother of Saint Peter, was according to Christian tradition martyred in Patras, Greece, on an X-shaped cross, today called the Cross of Saint Andrew.

Beautiful overall preservation, patina of antiquity. Seal and sealing cords present.

The photos are an integral part of the description of the objects and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the object of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
