Description from the seller
A rare and fascinating lot consisting of 2 antique Art Nouveau postcards attributable to Alphonse Mucha iconography, depicting the same Byzantine-inspired female subject in two different chromatic variants.
The images evoke the famous compositions of the “Têtes Byzantines / Byzantine Heads,” one of the most characteristic themes of Mucha’s decorative production in the late 19th century.
Particularly interesting is the presence of the two versions of the same subject: one predominantly in green tones, the other in red, gold and brown tones.
One of the postcards features on the front a handwritten dedication with a clearly legible date: “Paris, 16 Février 1901,” an element that documents the presence of the item already at the beginning of the 20th century.
The backs bear the typical postal markings of the era, including “Carte Postale – Ce côté est exclusivement réservé à l’adresse” and, on the other item, the multilingual designation “Postkarte – Carte Postale – Correspondenzkarte – Cartolina postale – Dopisnice – Levelező-Lap – Briefkaart – Union postale universelle.”
Exemplars from a historic private collection.
Good overall condition considering the age, with normal signs of time and conservation. (see photos)
card format 8,9x13,7 mm
