Swolla, a non-coloured map of Zwolle in the Netherlands, engraved by Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) as part of Topographia Circuli Burgundici, dimensions 12 x 40 cm, condition Good.
Description from the seller
Description: Magnificent, rare, and clear panoramic view, horizontally aligned, of the historic Dutch city of Zwolle (indicated with the ancient Latin and German toponym “Swolla.”), engraved and published by the famous workshop of Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593–1650) and completed by his son Caspar Merian in Frankfurt am Main. The plate is drawn from the renowned and monumental chorographic works of the Merian family, created in collaboration with the historian Martin Zeiller, specifically the volumes devoted to the provinces of the Netherlands. The engraving describes with extraordinary and sharp burin precision the fortified skyline of Zwolle, capital of Overijssel and former Hanseatic city, displaying its characteristic spires and dominant sacred architectures, including the majestic tower of the Basilica of Our Lady (Onze Lieve Vrouwentoren) and the imposing Sint-Michaelskerk. The late-medieval urban fabric appears entirely enclosed and defended by a powerful bastioned wall, interspersed with fortified gates and lapped by wide moats and water canals. In the foreground, the harmonious and detailed rural landscape is enriched by trees, cultivated fields, and pedestrians, giving notable depth of perspective and aesthetics to the entire composition. The specimen is presented in truly excellent condition, printed on sturdy contemporary paper, with a sharp inking, excellent chiaroscuro contrasts, and large original margins untouched. A refined work of art, ideal to complete collections of European views and antique cartography of the United Provinces.
