Description from the seller

Unique and Rare - Art Deco, industrial heritage - Hand-drawn commemorative sheet “Labor Vincit” - Amsterdamsche Ballast Nedam Maatschappij 1896-1921
25 years of work, framed

Rare, uniquely handmade commemorative sheet to remember 25 years of corporate activity of the Amsterdamsche Ballast Maatschappij (Ballast Nedam) (1896-1921). The sheet is drawn, written, and painted entirely by hand with ink, gold and silver paint, and red lacquer/paint, making it a unique piece. It is not print.

In elegant handwriting, per year the works carried out from 1896 to 1920 are listed, divided over three columns. It includes, among other things, the excavation of the Houthaven, paving works in Amsterdam (Linnaeusstraat, Nieuwe Leliestraat, Van Baerlestraat, Admiraal de Ruijterweg), the loading and unloading of sand, quay walls, raising of terrains (IJ-eiland, Spaarndammerbuurt, Oostelijk Havengebied), the construction of railway lines (e.g. Leiden-Oude Wetering, Alkmaar-Uitgeest), the Hoogovens works at IJmuiden and the brown coal exploitation Carisborg. The sheet provides a remarkable snapshot of Amsterdam’s expansion during that period.

The ornamentation consists of:

- The Amsterdam city coat of arms (red with the three St. Andrew’s crosses) at the top
- A stylized sea motif with a tugboat and a train with tipping wagons
- Four drawn small scenes: a wheelbarrow, a crane/dredger, a steam winch, and a bucket dredge
- Stylized years 1896 and 1921 in red and silver cartouches
- A decorative side border with tools (pulley, drill, tools)
- The motto “LABOR VINCIT” (work conquers) in Art Deco letters
- The society’s emblem with the text Amsterdamsche Ballast Maatschappij
- Geometric borders with gold leaf/gold paint and silver paint

Framed: dark wooden frame with a layered cream-colored mat with gold lines. On top a brass ornament (eagle/decoration) as suspension. Back with a label from A.J. Heijdenrijk Jr. N.V., Encadrementen-Lijsten, Amsterdam (Rokin 105) / The Hague (Noordeinde), a well-known frame-maker/art dealer.

Condition: see photos. Light yellowing and spots appropriate to age, the paint and ink are well preserved. Not removed from the frame.

Size:
approx. 81 cm L
approx. 46.5 cm H

Well packed and insured shipping.
