20th‑century decorative jewellery box in a Neo‑Renaissance/Neo‑Rococo style, made of tin (95% pewter) with gilding, from Italy, with a swivelling handle and putti heads, dimensions approx. 25 cm high to handle, 23 cm long, 17 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Italy, ca. 1950
Richly decorated box of cast tin (pewter 95%), executed in a historicizing Baroque style. The lid rises to a pyramid shape, with a leaf border and chased scrollwork, and has a large swinging handle in the form of curling acanthus leaves. The bulging walls feature finely dotted backgrounds with arabesques, interlacing stems and a key plate. On the corners are three-dimensional putti heads (cherubs), and the box stands on four fluted, foliated feet.
The surface has a warm patina, partly gilt-gold and partly grey-silver. At the bottom is a diamond-shaped stamp:
PELTRATO 95% F.G.
Around it in four languages: PEWTER / ZINN / TIN / ÉTAIN VÉRITABLE
Material: cast tin (95%), with traces of gilding or a gold-toned layer
Handle: movable swinging handle, raised in the photos
Lock: keyhole present; the key is not present.
Condition: signs of use and an uneven patina. There is light oxidation on the lid, and the edge of the lid is slightly damaged or rough in the photos. The lid requires a bit of assistance to open.
Dimensions:
approx. 25 cm H to the handle
approx. 17 cm H to the lid
approx. 17 cm W
approx. 23 cm L
Will be well packed and insured shipped.
