A pair of gilded bronze Empire-style amphora vases from France, dating to circa 1810–1820, each measuring 29 by 13 cm.
Description from the seller
An elegant pair of gilt bronze amphora vases from the Empire period, manufactured in France at the beginning of the 19th century, circa 1810–1820. Each vase has a neoclassical form with a flared neck, crowned by a wide rounded rim finely chased with gadroons and foliate motifs. The body is flanked by two slender, gracefully curved handles, decorated with stylized botanical motifs and palmettes, characteristic of the Empire style’s decorative repertoire. The lower portion of the vases is especially richly adorned with finely chased acanthus leaves and palmettes. Each vase rests on a baluster-shaped foot with leaf decoration, set on a square base and a stepped plinth, finished with a vegetal frieze. The quality of the chasing is enhanced by the graceful interplay between matte and polished gilded surfaces, creating subtle contrasts that beautifully highlight the relief of the ornamentation. The vases are constructed from several parts, manufactured and assembled according to the traditional bronze casting techniques of the period. The undersides retain their original wooden caps and old handwritten inscriptions. Thanks to their harmonious proportions, pleasing symmetry, and refined neoclassical decoration, these vases form a fine example of French decorative art from the Empire period. Origin: France Period: Empire, circa 1810–1820 Material: gilt bronze Dimensions: each 29 × 13 cm Condition: Very good condition, with light signs of use and aging appropriate to the age.
