Description from the seller
Callaghan & Co. - 23a Bond St. London - The Derby - Binoculars, Made in Paris - In the original case
England, ca. 1888-1890
"The Derby" field binoculars/binoculars, which were brought to market in the late 19th century (the Victorian or Edwardian period) by Callaghan & Co. This well-known firm was then based at 23A New Bond Street in London.
This specific type of binocular is known under the model name "The Derby." As the name suggests, the model was primarily marketed and used for outdoor sporting events, such as horse racing. Print advertisement for Callaghan’s Opera & Race Glasses and Derby race glass, Callaghan & Co., opticians, 23A New Bond Street, London, c. 1888
The frame is made of patinated brass (as seen by the wear on the caps at the front). The housing of the optical tubes is wrapped in distinctive, textured dark brown or black leather for a better grip.
It is a Galilean binocular without internal prisms, equipped with a centrally grooved focussing wheel to mechanically adjust the focal distance.
Callaghan & Co. was a highly renowned maker and dealer of scientific and optical instruments, whose heyday stood between 1860 and 1900. Many of their high-quality binoculars and theatre glasses were produced in Paris (the then center of high-quality optical glass production) and were personalized and sold by Callaghan in London.
Dimensions:
approx. 13 cm H
approx. 11 cm W
approx. 5 cm D lens
Shipped well packed and insured.
