Description from the seller
The main theme of this work is architectural and industrial utopia, a fundamental pillar of the steampunk and retro-futurist universe of The Obscure Cities.
The illustration explores several major sub-themes:
• Gigantism and excess: The Gigantic embodies the dream of triumphant human technology, capable of building flying machines so immense that they exceed comprehension and defy the laws of gravity.
• Retrofuturism (or steampunk): The piece blends an aesthetic inspired by the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Eiffel-type metal structures, grand airships) with a fantasized futuristic vision.
• Contemplation and mystery: The foreground characters, tiny before the machine, reinforce the sense of vertigo, fascination, and solitude inherent to Schuiten’s imagined cities.
What would you like to explore next? I can tell you about:
• The importance of transportation means in the universe of The Obscure Cities.
• The influence of Art Nouveau architecture and Jules Verne on Schuiten’s work.
The lithograph will be sent as is with the frame included
