Rated Excellent on Trustpilot.
Rare large vintage Sosaku Kokeshi titled 'Kaguya-hime', signed by Sekiguchi Toa (circa 1970), measures 13 cm high and 14 cm wide, made of wood in Japan, in good vintage condition with minor signs of aging and spots.
Description from the seller
A uniquely shaped example of a Japanese Sosaku (creative) Kokeshi doll, titled "Kaguya-hime" (Princess Kaguya). This iconic design is inspired by the classic Japanese folk tale of the Moon Princess born from a bamboo stalk.
This specific object was crafted by the highly valued and multiple award-winning Kokeshi master Sekiguchi Toa (winner of, among other things, the prestigious Prime Minister's Award).
What makes this doll extra special is its rare, egg-shaped and strikingly wide proportions (13 cm tall and 14 cm wide). Unlike traditional slender, cylindrical Kokeshi dolls, this model has a monumental, almost sculptural appearance that fits perfectly within a modern or Mid-Century interior.
The doll is masterfully decorated with a combination of techniques: deep black glossy lacquer for the hair, an ochre kimono enriched with glittering green-gold cloud patterns in relief, and contrasting deep red details.
Authenticity:
On the underside, the doll is hand-signed by the artist in black ink with the characters 東亜 作 (Toa saku – "Made by Toa").
In good vintage condition with light age-related traces inherent to the age and material. The wood and lacquer have preserved a beautiful, warm patina. The signature on the underside is fully intact and clearly legible. See the detailed photos for an accurate personal impression of the condition.
For shipments within the European Union there are no customs clearance charges included.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped.
Please note that the packaging has been prepared by an individual and not by a professional service, so perfect packaging quality cannot be guaranteed. Thank you for your understanding
