Description from the seller

Circa 1900. Verrerie Legras & Cie in St-Denis. France

Magnificent rare vase LEGRAS, famous model “Chambord,” in blown glass with an opacified base in warm orange and amber tones offering superb twilight nuances that seem to evolve with the light and give the décor the atmosphere of a landscape seen at dusk.

On this luminous ground unfolds a charming enameled lake landscape delicately hand-painted, designed as a true panorama surrounding the vase.

In the foreground rise tall trees with slender trunks whose foliage, worked in subtle shades of olive green and brown, frame the tranquil waters of a lake. On the opposite shore appears a succession of hills and wooded copses finely drawn, while several small sailboats sail silently on the water, their dark silhouettes reflecting delicately on its surface.

As you rotate the vase, the landscape transforms and gradually reveals itself: the trees shift in perspective, the shores recede, the sailboats appear and then disappear behind the large trunks… A particularly successful composition that gives this piece the impression of a real little panoramic landscape imprisoned in the glass.

The decoration benefits from remarkable artisanal enamel work, blending with great finesse drawn areas and thicker, textured zones. The foliage and the ground, almost in relief, contrast beautifully with the satin transparency of the glass and enhance the depth of the scene.

This poetic vision of nature fully belongs to the universe of François-Théodore Legras, deeply attached to the forest landscapes of his native Vosges, whose woods, bodies of water and tree-lined horizons provided a recurring source of inspiration for his landscape creations.

Rare height of 18.5 cm, giving this piece a charming volume and remarkable decorative presence.

LEGRAS… the great master of the forest
François-Théodore Legras, sometimes nicknamed “the Emperor of Saint-Denis,” never forgot his Vosges origins. The son of a woodcutter and himself familiar with the forest world from a very young age before his glassmaking apprenticeship, he maintained a deep sensitivity to nature throughout his career.

At the turn of the 20th century, this fascination expresses itself with particular force in his famous landscape décors, where majestic trees, lakes, rivers, mountains and wooded horizons become as many subjects allowing the glassmaker to transform the surface of the vase into a true painting.

This superb vase “Chambord” is a very fine illustration: a work where glass, light and enamel meet to reproduce the quiet poetry of a lake bordered by trees under the last glow of the day.

Proof of the famous model “Chambord,” a perfectly authentic vase illustrated in the renowned Catalog raisonné “Legras Maître Verrier.”

In very good condition for its great age—over 125 years!—with a particularly fresh decor and beautiful colors, always vivid and warm, blending in a superb harmony of autumnal and twilight tones.

To note only some discreet, typical signs of use quite normal and coherent with the time elapsed, for this vase created around 1900.

A very beautiful and authentic Legras piece from the very beginning of the 20th century, charming and rare for its unusually small size, and above all for the poetry of its exceptional lakeside landscape etched in glass.

A collectible piece full of charm, a true glass painting, which will undoubtedly enhance an interior and inspire admiration from connoisseurs of French Art Nouveau glass from the early 20th century, Nancy School. Daum Nancy era, Gallé, Le verre Français, Schneider, Lalique…
