Description
This small metal pendant is distinguished by its globular lower body, tapered neck and pierced suspension element at the top. The geometric divisions extending radially across the lower body create the appearance of a stylised solar rosette (Solar Rosette).
In Old Norse, Sól (sun) is also the name of the sun goddess who travels across the sky in a chariot drawn by horses in Scandinavian mythology. Considered alongside the concept of sólarhjól, meaning “sun wheel,” the pendant's radially divided rosette decoration establishes a visual connection with the mythological world of the Norse, shaped by the sun and celestial cycles.
In Scandinavian culture, the sun was an important celestial body associated with the passage of time and the changing seasons. In Norse mythology, Sól's journey across the sky is one of the narratives explaining the daily movement of the sun. This cultural tradition illustrates the historical significance of solar and circular motifs within Scandinavian symbolism.
The prominent horizontal band around the upper body separates the neck from the globular lower section, while the dark brown and greenish patina complements the metal's distinctive appearance. The opening in the suspension element provides a functional arrangement suitable for wearing the object as a pendant.
Its compact dimensions, pronounced three-dimensional form and rosette-like geometric decoration make this piece attractive to collectors of Viking Age personal ornaments and Scandinavian symbolism.
