Description from the seller
Reliquary of the Holy Cross – Lignum Crucis – Italy, 19th century
Reliquary in gilded alloy, presumably bronze, of Italian work from the 19th century.
The architectured and completely openwork mount presents a rich Baroque décor of relief angels, scrollwork and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole, resting on four feet with volutes and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, giving a remarkable polychromy to the gilded décor.
Relic of the Holy Cross
The central theca contains a relic of the Holy Cross (Lignum Crucis), consisting of two fragments of wood arranged in the form of a cross on their old mount, under glass.
On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical red wax seal, still in place.
A very fine example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its workmanship.
Signs of use and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.
The photos are an integral part of the object description and complete its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
Happy bidding
