Pair of two female terms carved in wood, dating to the first half of the 17th century, in oak, with deep relief and an old dark patina, each element measuring 40 cm high by 10 cm wide by 7 cm deep, sold together as a pair.
Description from the seller
Pair of carved wood female term figures – Flanders, 17th century
Beautiful pair of female terms (term figures) in carved wood with strong relief, probably Flemish origin and dating from the first half of the 17th century.
Both figures are depicted with the bust naked, adorned with a pendant necklace. A draped garment tied at the waist extends into an abundant composition of deeply carved foliage. Their faces uplifted, the hair treated in broad locks, and the vigor of the sculpture fit within the decorative vocabulary of late Renaissance and early Baroque of the Low Countries.
The backs are entirely flat, showing that they were originally elements of wall appliques, likely integrated into a piece of furniture, woodwork, or architectural decor. This type of female term is well documented in 17th-century Flemish furniture.
Beautiful antique dark brown patina with wear revealing the natural wood tonalities in places. Later hanging rings.
Condition: antique condition with wear, old wood-boring insect holes, small losses and abrasions, mainly at the lower extremities. The overall presence remains very striking and the patina particularly interesting. Please study the photographs, which are part of the description.
Dimensions of each piece: H. 40 cm × W. 10 cm × D. 7 cm.
Sold together as a pair.
The photos form an integral part of the objects’ description and complement their presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
