Description from the seller

Russian Nativity Icon of the Virgin – Moscow – 18th century + Certificate of Authenticity

Important Russian icon representing the Nativity of the Most Holy Mother of God, painted in tempera on wood panel and enriched with an imposing repoussé silver riza, chased and engraved.

The composition unfolds several episodes around the birth of the Virgin: at the center, Saint Anne, newly delivered, is surrounded by maids, while the scene of the Child’s bath occupies the lower part. Several sacred figures take place within an architecture that is particularly elaborate, characteristic of traditional Russian iconography.

The riza, richly worked with scrolls and vegetal motifs, reveals the essential parts of the painting and features several saints in relief on the sides. Inscriptions in Cyrillic characters are engraved in the upper part.

IDENTIFICATION OF THE WORKSHOP AND GUILD

Macro-photographic analysis of the metals reveals a complete regulatory set of four official marks of the Russian Empire

1) The Master Goldsmith: Mark “В.И” in Cyrillic. This is the workshop of Vasily Ivanov (Василий Иванов), a Moscow-based renowned craftsman specializing in liturgical goldsmithing in the second half of the 18th century.

2) The Alderman (Senior Juror of the Guild): Heart-shaped mark stamped with the letters “ А·О / П ”. This official control mark belongs to Afanassy Petrov (Афанасий Петров), who served as juror-certifier in Moscow at this exact date.

3) The City: Mark depicting Saint George slaying the dragon, unequivocally confirming manufacture within the Moscow guild.

4) The Metal Title: Historically Russian alloy at 84 zolotniks (equivalent to 875/1000 silver), enhanced with a mercurial gilding of the time (vermeil).

5) The Date: Engraved figures confirming the year 1770.

Dimensions: 32.5 × 27 cm.

The icon bears marks, cracks, lifts and wear visible in the photographs, consistent with its age. The riza also shows patina and signs of old use. The reverse retains its wood panel and crossbars. The icon has undergone restorations which may seem entirely acceptable in view of its “age”.

The work is accompanied by its certificate of authenticity and sale issued by the auction house and authorized cultural goods operator. The certificate describes the work as a “Icoană pe lemn, cu ferecătură din argint aurit, Nașterea Maicii Domnului”, originating from a Moscow workshop, Russia, approximately dated to 1770, and indicates an 875 silver ferrule.

Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow you to appreciate its condition and features. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
