Description from the seller

Reliquary of the Holy Sepulchre – Italy, 19th century

The architecturally styled alloy mounting (gilded bronze) and fully openwork presents a rich Baroque decoration of relief angels, scrolls and foliage, organized around a central theca. The whole, resting on four scroll feet and topped with a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, bringing a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decoration.

The central theca houses a relic laid out on a textile background and accompanied by its manuscript titulus: “Sepulcro D.N.J.C.” that is Sepulcrum Dominī Nōstrī Iēsū Chrīstī: of the Sepulchre of Our Lord Jesus Christ.

On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical red wax seal, still in place.

A very fine example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its execution.

Wear and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.

Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any bidding.

The object will be carefully packaged and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding

In accordance with canonical law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
