Description from the seller

Reliquary Ex Tunicam D.N.J.C – Italy, 19th century

Reliquary in gilded alloy, Italian craftsmanship of the 19th century.

The architectural and fully pierced mount presents a rich Baroque décor of relief angels, scrolls and foliage, arranged around a central theca.

The whole, resting on four feet with volutes and surmounted by a cross, is punctuated by red and green glass cabochons, bringing a remarkable polychromy to the gilded decoration.

The central theca houses a relic laid on a textile background.
The upper titulus reads « Ex Tunicam » — more likely for Ex Tunica — meaning « of the Tunic ».
The lower titulus « D.N.J.C. » corresponds to Domini Nostri Jesu Christi, « of Our Lord Jesus Christ ».
It is therefore a fragment traditionally attributed to the Holy Tunic of Christ, displayed in the center on a red silk background, under glass.

On the reverse, the theca retains its ecclesiastical seal in red armorial wax, still in place.

A very beautiful example of an Italian Baroque reliquary, remarkable for the richness of its mount, its abundant angelic decoration and the quality of its execution.

Wear and small ancient alterations in keeping with age and use.

The photos are an integral part of the object description and complement the presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any bid.

The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, in order to guarantee fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding
