Diptyque Photo Ancien Belle Époque (c. 1900) – Canotage à Bougival / Bords de Seine – Rares Barques, two authentic circa 1900 gelatin silver prints mounted on stiff card, 39 × 27 cm, in good condition, unsigned, by Anonyme, printed around 1900 and featuring boats numbered 67 and 86, offered by Propriétaire ou revendeur.
Description from the seller
Superb and rare set of two vintage photographs from around 1900-1910, originally mounted on a single rigid cardboard support.
These highly sharp shots immortalize a boating scene on the Seine, perfectly capturing the art of living and the atmosphere of the Belle Époque guinguettes, so dear to Guy de Maupassant and to the Impressionist painters.
The two main wooden boats bear very clear fleet numbers painted on the bow: boat No. 67 and boat No. 86. Direct testimony of the massive fleets of the great Parisian boat rental companies of the era (Maison Fournaise, Levanneur...). A third boat with people is visible in the background.
Magnificent close-up shot of the Parisian bourgeoisie on a carefree outing (young oarsman in a shirt and black waistcoat, elegantly dressed in Edwardian hats).
Authentic period prints. The backing card shows signs of time and minor oxidation (natural foxing) that certify its age and authenticity, without altering the sharpness of the photographed scenes.
Ideal piece for a collector of old photographs, passionate about local history of the Seine banks (Bougival, Chatou, Croissy, La Grenouillère) or an admirer of the literary universe of Maugame (Mouche, La Femme de Paul).
