Description from the seller

Christofle – Antique Silver-Plated Oval Chafing Dish / Food Warmer – Monogram BR – France

An elegant antique oval silver-plated chafing dish, or chauffe-plat, manufactured by the renowned French silversmith Christofle, dating most likely from the late 19th to early 20th century.

This refined serving piece reflects the elegance of traditional French dining and the craftsmanship for which Christofle has been internationally celebrated since its foundation in Paris in 1830.

Design & Decoration

The oval body features beautifully rounded contours, elegant horizontal mouldings and two gracefully curved side handles with decorative attachments.

The dish rests on four finely turned pedestal feet, giving it a distinguished and balanced appearance.

A particularly charming detail is the finely engraved “BR” monogram, executed in an elaborate Gothic-style lettering, adding a personal and historical character to the piece.

The removable oval lid has a gently domed surface with a raised border, complementing the harmonious proportions of the dish.

A series of ventilation openings around the upper rim is characteristic of this type of traditional serving equipment.

Historical Use

Originally designed for elegant dining rooms, formal dinners and refined table service, this type of chauffe-plat was used to help maintain the temperature of prepared dishes during service.

Such pieces were particularly appreciated in wealthy households, grand residences and establishments where elaborate table presentation was an essential part of the dining experience.

Today, it makes a beautiful addition to an antique silverware collection, an elegant buffet arrangement or a sophisticated dining table.
