The Umayyad Caliphate (661-750 AD), founded by Mu'awiya ibn Abi Sufyan and centered in Damascus, was Islam’s first hereditary dynasty. It expanded from Iberia and North Africa to Central Asia and the Indus Valley. Under Abd al-Malik (685-705 AD), reforms Arabized administration and introduced standardized dinars, dirhams, and purely epigraphic fals bearing Islamic inscriptions, replacing Byzantine and Sasanian imagery. The Abbasid Revolution ended Umayyad rule in 750 AD.
