Specimen: Fascination of Nature: exquisite pale pelican-foot shell housing (Aporrhaidae), 39 mm long, Mediterranean origin, good condition, 1974.
Description from the seller
Expand your collection with a true maritime work of art. For sale is a beautiful, bright shell of the common Pelican’s Foot (Aporrhais pespelecani). With a perfect size of 39 mm, this piece proudly displays the eponymous, bizarre burrowing spines that resemble the foot of a wading bird. The shell stands out for its rare, light coloring and is in good, collectible condition with an excellently preserved structure.
Worth knowing about this prachtstück:
The species & morphology: The Pelican’s Foot belongs to the historically ancient family Aporrhaidae. The special thing: Only the adult snails develop the characteristic wing-like, serrated outer lip. This 39 mm long shell represents the final, formally perfected developmental stage of the snail.
Lifestyle: In the wild, these fascinating animals typically live buried in soft sand or mud at depths of 10 to 180 meters. There they filter fine food particles and organic material directly from the water. Their movement is unique: they creep a little forward and then haul their heavy shell forward with a strong jerk.
Origin: This species is native to the north-eastern Atlantic, from Iceland across the North Sea to Morocco, and throughout the Mediterranean. It prefers waters with stable, higher salinity.
