Exclusive collector's volute snail Voluta ebraea, 112 mm (11.2 cm) in GEM condition, from Brazil, dating to 1980.
Description from the seller
Scientific name: Voluta ebraea (Linnaeus, 1758) – in the German-speaking world known as the Hebrew volute snail or Hebrew volute. Its name is based on the complex, dark brown lines and spines that resemble ancient Hebrew script.
Origin & Localities: Brazil; this excellent specimen comes from the famous reef and coastal zones of Maceió (Alagoas, Northeast Brazil). The populations there are valued by malacologists for especially high-contrast, dark drawings on a light, cream-colored ground.
Habitat: A predatory endemate of Brazilian waters. The species lives on sandy substrates and in the vicinity of coral reefs at depths of 0 to 40 meters, where they are usually selectively retrieved by lobster fishermen using bottom nets (lobster nets).
Size & Conservation: 112 mm – An excellent, fully grown and representative cabinet-size for this heavy volute snail species. Condition GEM (Absolute museum and top quality): For this species a great rarity. Since the shell apex as well as the distinctive crown of spines on the shoulder in wild-caught specimens almost always erode or suffer damage in nets, this piece is completely flawless, with sharp-edged, intact spines, a razor-sharp outer lip, and excellent surface luster.
