Additional information
Gold coins used in the Malay archipelago between the 10th and 13th centuries. Probably first developed on Java during the Śailendra period before spreading to various locations, such as Sumatra and the Malay Peninsula. In literature commonly called "sandalwood flower coins", based on the reverse design, or "mā-coins". Often inaccurately identified as Majapahit coins, although the general use of this coin predates the founding of the Majapahit Empire in 1293 AD. By the fourteenth century, cash transactions in Majapahit had effectively shifted to Chinese cash coins (Wicks 1986: 44-47, 50-55).
