Description from the seller
A refined and decorative Japanese Arita ware porcelain bowl dating to the late 19th century (Meiji period, circa 1870–1900).
The interior is beautifully hand-painted in underglaze blue and green tones, depicting an atmospheric landscape with pine trees, mountains and a traditional sailing boat. Two elegant cranes with red crowns are shown in flight — a powerful symbol of longevity, prosperity and good fortune in Japanese culture.
The painting is executed in expressive brushwork, typical of late 19th-century Arita porcelain made for both the domestic and export markets. The soft celadon-tinted glaze enhances the depth of the decoration and gives the bowl a serene, almost misty appearance.
The exterior is elegantly plain, emphasizing the artistic interior scene. The base shows concentric turning rings and a neatly finished foot rim, consistent with Meiji-period production.
Origin: Arita, former Hizen Province, Kyūshū, Japan
Period: Meiji period (late 19th century)
Material: Porcelain
Technique: Hand-painted underglaze decoration
Height: 9 cm
Diameter: 28 cm
Weight: 1.680 kg
In very good antique condition.

No visible restorations
Minor wear and light surface traces consistent with age
Foot rim shows natural firing and age-related marks
Please examine the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
Large Arita bowls of this size (28 cm) with finely painted crane decoration are highly decorative display pieces and sought after by collectors of Japanese porcelain and Asian decorative arts. The combination of landscape, maritime element and crane symbolism makes this a visually balanced and culturally meaningful example of Meiji craftsmanship.
