Description from the seller

Polychrome carved wooden Christ on the cross – Italy, circa 1800 – 38 cm

Very beautiful Christ on the cross in carved and polychrome wood, of Italian origin, dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, circa 1800.

This religious sculpture is distinguished by its especially striking expression and the finesse of its anatomical treatment.

The Christ is depicted as living, arms widely spread, head raised to the sky and gaze turned upward. His slightly parted mouth and face marked by suffering convey with intensity the last moments of the Passion.

The face, particularly expressive, features glass eyes, accentuating realism and depth of the gaze. The flowing hair and the beard are carefully carved.

The body, with slender proportions, presents delicate anatomical modeling. The perizonium, tied at the hip, is animated by soft and natural folds.

The polychromy, with realistic flesh tones, is enriched by numerous depictions of wounds and bleeding, notably on the forehead, hands, knees and feet.

Remarkable detail: the back of the Christ shows a particularly developed depiction of flogging injuries, with numerous whip marks and painted blood streaks.

The hands and feet retain their old iron pyramid-headed nails.

This work bears witness to the Italian tradition of devotional sculptures, favoring a naturalistic and emotional portrayal of the Passion of Christ.

Condition: good overall considering its age. The polychromy shows an ancient patina, wear, small chips and localized alterations, notably on the fingers and the perizonium. Presence of small metal elements at the level of the head and an old fixing hole on the reverse.

Christ presented without his cross.

The photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The object will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.
