Dream Chevron Amethyst skull from Brazil, a skull-shaped amethyst weighing 85 g with chevron banding and brown‑white fibrous zones, 4.9 × 3.6 × 3.2 cm.
Description from the seller
Even before Islam, tales in Arabia spoke of the ghul, a being of the djinn. It haunts cemeteries and abandoned places, luring the unwary into the desert to kill and devour them there. It feeds on the dead and takes the form of the last one it has eaten. Thus it always bears a borrowed face, under which its own remains hidden.
The poet Ta’abbata Sharran, whose name means “He carried the misfortune under his arm,” boasted in a famous poem of having defeated a ghul. Centuries later the scholar al-Djahiz mocked this braggadocio. The ghul reached Europe only at the beginning of the 18th century with Antoine Galland’s French translation of One Thousand and One Nights, as a corpse-eater who roams cemeteries.
This skull shows a ghul at the moment when the borrowed guise begins to crumble. From the crown grow ghostly tendrils, fibers like mangled hair, brown and white interwoven. Beneath its wide shrubbery, eerie purple contours shimmer forth. At the mandible the skin lies open. After years of enduring internal poisons, it has withered and become translucent, and in unnaturally opened forms the deep violet appears—the true face beneath the foreign one.
Its violet hue is owed to traces of iron in the amethyst, which only acquire color through natural radiation. This color is delicate and can fade if the stone is exposed to strong light for too long. This skull should therefore also be kept in half-darkness.
Material: Amethyst (purple quartz variety) with white quartz in chevron banding and brown, fibrous-looking inclusion zones (trade name “Dream Chevron Amethyst”)
Origin: Brazil
Dimensions: 4.9 x 3.6 x 3.2 cm
Weight: 85 g
Special features: Skull cap and back of head with brown-white, fibrous-hairlike zones that transition downward into violet amethyst; lower jaw and underside of skull deeply purple and translucent; around the nose and eye sockets, parts of clearer, glassy translucent quartz; highly polished; protect from permanent direct sunlight
