Description from the seller

Grand reliquary with paper appliqués – Holy Face of Christ and relics of the Holy Land – 19th century

Important reliquary (56 cm) presenting a remarkable composition of gilded paper filigree, relics and pilgrimage memories, organized around a representation of the Holy Face of Jesus Christ.

In the center, a bas-relief depiction of the Holy Face of Jesus Christ, evoking the Veil of Veronica, is surrounded by a radiant glory, small silver ornaments and floral motifs.

The whole is distinguished by the richness and finesse of its decoration: delicate paper filigree wound into spirals, radiating motifs, stars, gilded flowers and small shiny elements, arranged symmetrically on a black velvet background.

An oval crown of relics, accompanied by their identification labels, surrounds the central composition. Relics and sacred memories identified:
From the Holy Crèche of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Ex S. Præsepio D. N. Jesu Christi).
From the grotto of the Annunciation, in Nazareth.
From the Tree of the Virgin Mary in Egypt.
Forest of the Holy Land laid on the Holy Sepulchre.
From the Paschal Candle (De Cereus Paschali).
Dust from the Holy House of Loreto.
From the linen of Our Lord Jesus Christ (Lendendoek van O. H. J. C.).
From the swaddling clothes of the Infant Jesus.
From the garment of the Virgin Mary.
From the tomb of Saint Cecilia.
From the Mount of Olives, in Jerusalem.
From the Grotto of Milk, in Bethlehem.
From the tomb of the Holy Innocents.

Several inscriptions are written in Latin, French and Dutch, bearing witness to a devotion and pilgrimage tradition particularly developed in the former Catholic Netherlands.

An old label kept on the reverse, entitled Het H. Aanschijn (“The Holy Face”), accompanies the whole. It contains a religious text in Dutch and a historical reference dated November 5, 1649.

The reliquary is presented in its imposing oval blackened wood frame, closed by a glass.
The back preserves its old wooden panel and its suspension device. Era: 19th century

Possible origin: Belgium or the southern Netherlands.

Good overall condition, with patina and signs of age. Wear and small losses visible on the back. Richly preserved interior composition.

Photos form an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow you to assess its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.

The item will be carefully packed and shipped with a tracking number, to ensure fast and secure delivery.

Happy bidding

In accordance with canon law (can. 1190 §1), this sale concerns only the reliquary as a sacred art object. The relics it contains are not the subject of the transaction, but are included gratuitously for their historical and cultural value.
