Single Barrandeops ovatus trilobite specimen, fossil skeleton from Anti-Atlas, Morocco, Middle Devonian (about 393–383 million years ago), weighing 112 g with dimensions 74 × 46 × 41 mm.
Description from the seller
Trilobite Barrandeops Ovatus – Morocco - 390 Million Years Ago — This specimen belongs to the species Barrandeops ovatus, a trilobite of the Phacopidae family, characteristic of the Middle Devonian (approximately 393–383 million years ago). Coming from the fossil-bearing formations of the Moroccan Anti-Atlas, it shows three-dimensional preservation, with sharp anatomical details that enhance its scientific and collectible value. Morphological characteristics: bulging cephalon, with an oval and smooth glabella, typical of the ovatus species. Well-developed schizochroal eyes, consisting of hundreds of independent lenses, one of the most advanced visual structures among fossil arthropods. Short, rounded genae, lacking pronounced spines, which distinguishes this species from other similar genera such as Hollardops. Proportioned thorax and pygidium (not fully visible in this specimen, but characteristic of the species). These adaptations gave Barrandeops high mobility on the seabed and exceptional vision, useful for locating prey or defending against predators in Devonian seas. Trilobites of the Barrandeops genus derive from the old grouping “Moroccan Phacops” and represent a widely dispersed evolutionary lineage in the Devonian faunas of North Africa. The fossil site of the Anti-Atlas is one of the most important for the quality and variety of trilobites found: limestones that, thanks to ideal depositional conditions, have preserved the anatomical structures with extraordinary clarity. This Barrandeops ovatus specimen stands out for its precise preparation that highlights the natural relief and ocular details, offering a rare glimpse into an ancient visual system that has few parallels in the fossil animal kingdom. The combination of perfect preservation and species recognizability makes it an ideal piece for high-level paleontological collections, as well as an authentic fragment of natural history from almost 400 million years ago. Species: Barrandeops ovatus Era: Middle Devonian (about 393–383 Ma) Class: Trilobita Family: Phacopidae Provenance: Anti-Atlas, Morocco
