HISTORY & DOCUMENTATION

Unique! This Audi 80 has an original mileage of only 8,487 kilometers and is in absolute top condition, almost as it rolled off the factory floor in Ingolstadt. It is a luxury-equipped GL (Grand Luxe) version, featuring chrome trim and a more luxurious interior.

Also notable is the original documentation that remains with the car: an authentic registration certificate, user manual, delivery document and original invoice. On 12 October 1979 the Audi was registered and delivered in Trieste, Italy. The Audi has always been in the hands of the same owner and thus comes from the first owner.

The car and documentation have been well preserved in Italy over the years, and have recently been brought out of Italy by us. The new price was 6,670,000 Italian lire. Several original keys are also included with the car. Behind the windshield are original tax and insurance documents. The original license plate is "TS 225381".

EXTERIOR

The Audi is in exceptionally original and neat condition, without damages and with excellent fit of body parts. All windows are still original. The windows are tinted and the rear window is heated. Lighting, rubbers and chrome work are in original but very neat condition.

The same applies to the chromed decorative wheel covers on the 13" wheels. It is notable that the tires around are still original! The DOT code is 359 (week 35, 1979). They are (obviously German) Continental tires with still adequate tread and in good condition, but for safe driving replacement is recommended. The superb paintwork is painted in the beautiful original color "Mexico Beige" (color code LE 1 M). The original paint has not faded despite the sunny climate in Italy, still in very good condition with a lovely gloss. It can be seen that the car has been stored indoors.

INTERIOR

The interior features very handsome sand-colored Velour upholstery, beige trim and luxurious burgundy floor mats. These floor mats are sound-insulating, something Audi emphasized at the time. Air circulation and safety were highly regarded at Audi.

The dashboard is functional and clearly laid out. Next to the odometer are a economy gauge and a clock. The dashboard is finished in black artificial leather and is in pristine condition. The headlining is in new condition. The full interior is in excellent condition without damage.

As if time stood still!

The times the rear doors have been opened can probably be counted on one hand. The surprisingly spacious trunk area is also in very neat condition, and includes the spare wheel, spare bulbs and a jack.

TECHNICAL

In 1979 the Audi 80 was available with four different four-cylinder engines: a 1.3-liter engine, two 1.6-liter carbureted engines and a 1.6-liter injected engine. This example is a 1.3 version (1,272 cc) with carburetors and 60 hp. The fuel consumption is very economical at 1/14.9.

Coupled to a smooth four-speed gearbox and front-wheel drive, the car has a pleasant balance between comfort, sportiness and safety. On the front, disc brakes are installed; at the rear, drum brakes. The underside of the car is rock-solid and rust-free. The engine bay is exceptionally clean and dry. The Audi runs, shifts and brakes well. Only the exhaust gasket leaks slightly and it is advisable to perform maintenance.

GENERAL

The 1979 Audi 80 GL belongs to the second generation Audi 80 (B2), a model that played an important role in Audi’s growth as a premium brand. The Audi 80 was introduced in 1972 as the successor to the Audi F103 series, of which the Audi 60, 75, 80 and Super 90 were part. With its modern technology, relatively low weight, and efficient engines, the Audi 80 was an instant success.

In 1973 the model was even named Car of the Year in Europe, a significant recognition for the then relatively small brand Audi. This second generation received a completely redesigned body, more interior space and a broader range of engines. The B2 later formed the basis for the legendary Audi Coupé and the first Audi quattro, through which Audi established its reputation for all-wheel drive.

The GL version in 1979 was known as one of the more comfortable variants in the range. The car offered higher equipment level, including nicer upholstery, more interior comfort and extra attention to sound insulation and driving ease. Thanks to ergonomically shaped seats, a clear dashboard and well-thought-out ventilation, the Audi 80 GL was particularly suitable for long distances. Front-wheel drive, precise steering and economical four-cylinder engines contributed to a pleasant and reliable driving experience.

Today, the 1979 Audi 80 GL is valued as a rare and characterful classic. Many examples have disappeared due to rust or heavy daily use, making well-preserved cars increasingly hard to find. Precisely because of its historical significance, timeless design and solid German engineering, the Audi 80 GL has earned a secure place among classic Audi models.
