Description from the seller
Classic of Malacology: Strong shell of Purpura persica (72 mm) in F+++ top quality
For systematic collections and lovers of classic shell shapes: For sale is a beautiful, heavy display shell of the Persian purple snail (Purpura persica). With an impressive length of 72 mm, this piece perfectly showcases the species-typical, robust morphology with the greatly expanded aperture and large body whorl. The shell is in the coveted F+++ condition – the characteristic dark chocolate brown coloration with the white, interrupted spiral cords is distinctively preserved. The lip and the apex are in immaculate collectible condition.
Biological details & life cycle:
The genus & significance: Snails of the genus Purpura are historically world-famous. Since antiquity (especially by the Phoenicians), related species were used to obtain the precious purple dye, which was reserved for kings and emperors. Purpura persica also oozes a milky secretion when irritated, which oxidizes to a deep violet under light.
Lifestyle: These predatory sea snails are typical inhabitants of the intertidal zone. They cling to rocks exposed to strong surf. With their strong radula (rasping tongue) and acidic secretions, they hunt other mollusks such as acrothoracican barnacles, clams, or smaller Gastropoda, boring through their shells.
Origin: This species is widespread throughout the tropical Indo-Pacific. It prefers flat, oxygen-rich reef crests and rocky coastal areas.
