Fertility Doll, an Ashanti Akuaba fertility figure from Ghana, dating to the mid-20th century, carved in wood and 20 cm tall; in good condition and authentic, supplied without a stand.
Description from the seller
Ashanti Akuaba Fertility Doll.
Ghana.
Among the Ashanti people of Ghana, women wishing to conceive traditionally carry these figures, known as Akuaba dolls, tucked into their clothing. Characterised by their large, round and flattened heads, the figures are associated with fertility and are believed to originate from representations of the moon goddess. Once a child has been born, the mother may place the Akuaba on her household altar, where it is venerated in a shrine, or pass it down to the next generation.
This traditional Akuaba doll is carved from lightweight, light-coloured wood and finished with a black surface. It features a large, rounded head, arched eyebrows, small coffee-bean-shaped eyes and two short lines on each of the cheeks representing traditional scarification marks. The neck is decorated with notched rings. Distinctive signs of wear can be observed on exposed areas, reflecting prolonged use. The figure has a good patina and shows no other damage.
Object type: Akuaba Fertility Doll
Tribe: Ashanti
Material: wood
Height: 20 cm
The condition and potential fragments or signs of wear are documented in detail through presented photographs.
Shipment is included following further defined rates. Other delivery or pickup methods can be organised accordingly.
