Estromatolite specimen, colonial fossil of cyanobacteria, from Morocco, dating to the Precambrian–Neoproterozoic (about 600–800 million years ago), naturally preserved and conserved, with intact laminations and visible domes.
Description from the seller
Fossil colonial stromatolite - Microbial mat of cyanobacteria - One of the oldest fossils.
Description:
Fossil of botryoidal/colonial stromatolite, formed by colonies of photosynthetic cyanobacteria that built the planet's first reefs and generated the atmospheric oxygen. Irregular abstract-shaped specimen with 7-8 visible stromatolitic domes/cuppolas, with a very pronounced eye-of-needle concentric growth structure - lamination visible in circles.
The color is reddish-brown - ochre, due to iron oxidation of the sandstone matrix. Wavy laminar structure typical of microbial growth.
Type: Domal stromatolite - Collenia/Conophyton-type colonies - Stromatolitic limestone
Locality: Region of Atar, Mauritania / Anti-Atlas Morocco - Sahara
Geological Age: Precambrian - Neoproterozoic - Approx. 600 - 800 million years - subtidal marine
This fossil predates the dinosaurs, predates the trilobites. It is the origin of life.
Measurements:
Height: 140 - 16.5 cm
Width: 9.5 cm
Conservation:
Good / Very good. Natural, without restoration, without resin, without paint. Original laminations intact, unpolished. Natural irregular edge. Piece stable, solid.
Scientific Note:
Stromatolites are the oldest fossil evidence of life on Earth, about 3,500 million years ago
