Description from the seller
Service à potage Ernestine faïencerie with bamboo-style handles consisting of 12 saucers and 12 bowls, bamboo model with a tureen with a lid. It comprises 25 pieces; there is also the rest of the set on Catawiki, the coffee service and the dinner service with the soup bowls and the deep plates and another tureen. Oil, vinegar, salt, pepper—see the site. Thank you!! It all began during World War II. Ernestine Virden Cannon, a wealthy American decorator and designer (grandniece of the famous magnate J.P. Morgan), settled on the Amalfi coast. In Ravello, she met Matteo D'Agostino, a young Italian architect from a historic family of ceramic producers from Salerno.
2. Foundation and Innovation (1948)
In 1948, they officially founded the Ernestine manufactory near Salerno (in Brignano di Fratte). The duo perfectly split the roles:
• Matteo D'Agostino designs novel, clean, and geometric forms, breaking with traditional heavy ceramics.
• Ernestine Cannon (art director) creates highly modern hand-painted motifs inspired by nature, the sea, and Japanese calligraphy, applied using a unique watercolor technique.
To perfect their creations, they hire, in the early 1950s, a renowned German chemist, Horst Simonis. Thanks to him, the manufactory develops high-quality clays and lead-free, very bright glazes, an essential technical achievement to appeal to the world market.
