AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Jack Allen – Pair of Scottish Studio Glass Paperweights – Hand-Signed JA

Description

A beautiful and unusual matched pair of Scottish studio glass paperweights attributed to Jack Allen, one of the important craftsmen of the Scottish paperweight tradition.

Both pieces are individually handmade and feature the highly sophisticated internal lampwork and sculptural floral decoration associated with Scottish studio paperweight production.

Each paperweight is approximately 11 cm high and has a clear, highly polished glass body with a flat polished base. Both are hand-etched to the base with the initials “JA”, attributed to Jack Allen.

Paperweight 1 – Green and White Flower

The first piece has a predominantly clear glass body with a rich emerald-green lower section. Rising from this coloured ground is a striking white three-dimensional flower, with green stem and foliage incorporated within the glass.

The flower is entirely enclosed within the glass and appears to have been constructed using intricate lampworking techniques.

Paperweight 2 – Gold and Pink Filament

The second paperweight has a clear glass body with a subtle aqua/blue tint. Within the lower section is an attractive accumulation of gold-coloured metallic/aventurine material, from which rises an elaborate fine pink and clear filamentous lampwork structure.

The delicate internal construction gives this piece a particularly sculptural appearance.

Maker

Jack Allen (Scottish, 20th century)

Jack Allen was an important Scottish glassmaker and paperweight craftsman. He worked at Vasart/Strathearn, later became one of the founding craftsmen of Perthshire Paperweights, and subsequently worked at Caithness Glass.

He is particularly associated with sophisticated lampworked floral paperweights, including the well-known Flower in the Rain design produced at Caithness from 1973.
