(*) Pablo Ruiz Picasso (born in Málaga, Spain; 25 October 1881 – died in Mougins, France; 8 April 1973), known as Picasso, was a Spanish painter and sculptor, creator, together with Georges Braque and Juan Gris, of the Cubist movement.
Considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, he participated in the genesis of many artistic movements that spread around the world and exerted a great influence on other major artists of his time. Tireless and prolific, he painted more than two thousand works currently present in museums and collections across Europe and the world. In addition, he tackled other genres such as drawing, engraving, book illustration, sculpture, ceramics and the design of stage and costume for theatre productions.
Politically, Picasso declared himself pacifist and communist. He was a member of the French Communist Party until his death, on 8 April 1973 in Notre-Dame-de-Vie (Mougins, France) at the age of 91. He is buried in the park of the Château de Vauvenargues (Bouches-du-Rhône).
(**) Between 1951 and 1952, Pablo Picasso painted a series of motifs titled "War and Peace" for the "Temple of Peace" in Vallauris, France. “Le bouquet de l’amitié” was created for the peace rally held in Stockholm in 1958. It is characterized by an intense display of color, inherently conveying a sense of hope and unity. The bouquet forms a link between two individuals symbolized by the two hands shown within the piece. When speaking of this image, Foster states: “In this peace poster, Picasso has replaced the dove with flowers. By using the hands that grasp the stems of the flowers, he indicates the importance of brotherhood and friendship as essential elements of the piece.”
