Italian mid-century writing desk with artistic marquetry and rootwood – 2 drawers

Design & Construction

You are bidding on an Elegant Italian desk from the mid-century era, probably from the 1960s, in a classic Parsons form. The furniture combines a clear, straight silhouette with an exceptionally decorative treatment of the wood surfaces.

Particularly characteristic is the elaborately worked tabletop. Differently figured woods have been joined into a geometrically structured parquet/marquetry surface. Cross, square and rectangle structures form a regular pattern and, together with the varying grain patterns, create a lively, individual appearance.

The pronounced rootwood look gives the surface additional depth. The legs also display decoratively grained wood sections. They visually resemble rootwood, possibly chestnut rootwood; a professional wood identification was not performed.

The combination of geometric marquetry, natural wood grain, and the restrained Parsons construction makes the desk a distinctive Italian vintage piece.

Pricing classification

The 1stDibs reference shows that comparable Italian mid-century desks with elaborate marquetry and rootwood design were offered in the international vintage furniture market at the upper price range.

The actual value of the present item depends mainly on condition, provenance, and any potential later manufacturer attribution. The existing discoloration of the tabletop and the label that is no longer fully legible should be considered, as should the elaborate hand craftsmanship and the overall good state of preservation.
