Description from the seller
Antique historical wall mirror – Louis-style mirrors – W. J. Dorens En Zoon, Amsterdam
You are bidding on a historically antique wall mirror from the 19th century, attributed to the Amsterdam manufacturer W. J. Dorens En Zoon, Amsterdam, according to the mark on the back.
The mirror features an elaborately designed, classically influenced stylistic language with a plastic-looking corona, a central female medallion, floral ornamentation, and a meander frieze. The design is clearly based on French Louis XVI or Louis-inspired styles.
Corona and female medallion
Particularly characteristic is the three-dimensionally worked upper corona with a central oval female medallion
(Cameo-like depiction of an idealized female profile in a classically antiquated language).
On a stylistically and dimensionally very similar Dorens mirror, this motif is described on an international antiques platform as an “elegant lady in cameo form.” This designation describes the character of the depicted motif. A definite attribution to a specific historical personality, queen, or mythological figure has not yet been established.
The medallion is surrounded by leaf and vine motifs, floral ornaments, and decorative ribbons. Below it lies the classical meander frieze, visually transitioning into the frame design.
Historical dating and execution
The Dorens company is historically connected with the manufacture or trade of mirrors, mirror glass, gilding work, and decorated frames in Amsterdam. Mirrors by Dorens in gilded frames are documented as early as the 19th century.
The corona has a multi-layered three-dimensional structure. At existing damaged points, a fine metallic support or wire construction is visible. The metal appears visually brass-like; a magnet test showed no magnetic reaction in the accessible areas.
On this construction sits a plastic modeling or decorative layer with a gold-colored or gilded-looking surface. The exact material composition has not been laboratory-tested.
Mirror glass
The historic mirror glass shows clear age-related changes.
A glittering image as an appearance suggests that the mirror’s age is consistent with its estimated age, because such an optical property can only be due to age-related effects and the use of mercury in production.
Such phenomena can be associated with the aging of the backside mirror coating in historic mirror glass. In older mirrors, the mercury process for producing the reflective layer was used. Whether the coating of this particular mirror indeed relies on this process has not been material-tested.
Two small drives are well depicted in the photos...
The visible changes are therefore to be understood as age-related features of the historic mirror glass.
Condition
Age-appropriate used condition with authentic patina and corresponding signs of aging.
On the corona, at the right of the female medallion, there is a small loss. There is also a smaller damage in the upper right corner area of the frame.
The described changes and damages are traceable in the close-up photos.
