(FALKENBERG/BRANDENBURG)
Dear prospective buyers,
welcome to my auction!
You are bidding on an extraordinary, representative onyx column with artfully decorated, gold-colored metal fittings and a decorative, handmade ceramic bowl.
The imposing object combines the classic elegance of historic stone and metal work with a unique, handicraft design. With a total height of about 120 centimeters, it is a striking focal point and ideal as a decorative single piece for demanding living spaces, entryways, galleries, or a stylish antique-themed interior.
ORIGIN AND HISTORICAL CLASSIFICATION
The historical base corresponds in design to French presentation columns, called sellettes, produced especially in the second half of the 19th century.
Comparable specimens of onyx with brass or bronze fittings are attributed to French Historicism or the Napoleonic III era.
Characteristic features are the slender, cylindrical shaft, the massive square plinth, and the ornamented metal casings at the top and bottom of the column.
The exact origin and time of creation of this piece are not documented. Based on its design, a classification in the late 19th or early 20th century seems plausible.
THE ONYX COLUMN – NATURAL STONE AND CLASSICAL ORNAMENTATION
The centerpiece is the approximately 69 cm tall stone shaft with a warm, honey-yellow to amber base tone.
The natural grain shows lively color transitions and darker, cloud-like inclusions, lending the stone its special glow.
The square plinth with a base area of 25 × 25 centimeters provides a representative finish.
Particularly decorative are the gold-colored metal fittings, presumably made of brass.
The lower column end features classical ornaments and forms a harmonious transition between the square plinth and the round stone shaft.
The upper end also has a surrounding, ornamentally designed metal casing.
The combination of warm-toned natural stone and gold-colored metal work gives the column its elegant, historic appearance.
HANDMADE CERAMIC BOWL – A UNIQUE COMPLEMENT
The upper finish is formed by a generous, handcrafted ceramic bowl with a diameter of about 27 centimeters.
Its gray-green glaze is traversed by flowing, reddish-brown decorative bands.
Slight irregularities in shape and surface texture emphasize the artisanal character.
The ceramic bowl rests on a roughly two-centimeter-thick, color-matched wooden board.
Important for historical classification:
The upper design was altered later. Originally the column likely had a different cap plate, possibly also made of onyx.
The current combination of historically styled column base, wooden board, and handmade ceramic is thus to be understood as a later, individual addition.
It is precisely this contrast between classical column architecture and handicraft ceramics that gives the object its own decorative character.
