An exquisite and highly collectible Art Nouveau (Jugendstil/Secessionist) silver-plated flower basket / jardinière made by the renowned German manufacturer WMF (Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik). This iconic model, cataloged under No. 544, was first introduced in the famous 1906 WMF trade catalog (illustrated on page 102).
Design & Features:
The piece features a beautifully structured, geometric silver-plated (or pewter) frame characteristic of the late Secessionist movement. It is topped by a tall, elegant overarching handle. Inside sits the original, remarkable shaped clear glass liner with wave-like, organic scalloped edges that mimic blooming flower petals.
Markings & Authenticity:
The base of the metal frame bears clear, authentic stamps confirming its early 20th-century provenance:
• The distinct WMF "Ostrich" mark inside a rhombus placed within an arch, used between 1903 and 1910.
• I/O mark, indicating standard silver plating thickness (Normalversilberung).
• OX mark, indicating an intentionally oxidized/patinated finish, which beautifully highlights the relief decorations.
Condition Report:
• Metal Base: Excellent antique condition. The structural frame is sturdy, free of repairs or deep scratches, and retains a beautiful authentic patina with great contrast due to the original factory oxidation.
• Glass Insert: The original glass liner is present, which is highly sought after by collectors. Please note that there are small chips on the glass (please examine the close-up photos carefully). Despite these minor imperfections, the glass remains structurally stable, functions perfectly, and the chips do not severely detract from the magnificent overall presentation of the piece when displayed.
